Varier introduces iconic Ekstrem chair in six spring-inspired colourways

Oslo-based furniture company Varier has introduced the Ekstrem chair—one of the Nordic’s most iconic pieces of contemporary design—to its collection in a knitted velvet upholstery fabric.

Having remained almost unchanged since it was first conceived in 1984 by industrial designer Terje Ekstrøm, the Norwegian design icon has now been reimagined thanks to an innovative new upholstery technique.

Made with a new ‘Gentle’ upholstery, which consists of 28 separate pieces of fabric that are sewn together and manually fitted to the chair, ‘Gentle 2’ is designed and produced by Kvadart Febrik. The knitted stretch velvet is unique in that it clings remarkably well, making it ideal for upholstering organic shapes and curves like Ekstrem.
